Establishing yet another successful partnership with local educational and cultural associations, the American Corner in Xanthi co-organized an event on the “Greek Diaspora in the U.S.” featuring local speakers and a young historian from Athens. The program took place at the Municipal Gallery on December 18th and attracted local authorities, media and more than 80 people.

Supplementing a Halloween event at the American Corner of the Hellenic American Union in downtown Athens, the library staff organized its first Wii gaming session bringing joy and enthusiasm to more than thirty five junior high school students. With a short introduction about bowling and baseball, the young students formed teams and felt the thrill of playing with their schoolmates for more than thirty minutes. Teachers and library staff were there to facilitate, give instructions and even join the enthusiastic crowd of young players. The event took place on Monday, November 3, 2009.

Book exhibits, paper shows and educational programs were organized by the staff at six American Corners of Greece which participated in the celebration of Native American Heritage in November. Thanks to material and support provided by the Embassy’s IRC, more than 500 visitors in the cities which host American Corners attended the events throughout the month as they learned about the many accomplishments, contributions, and sacrifices of North America’s indigenous people. Results: The American Corners reached out to their communities and particularly to younger people and strengthened mutual understanding by showcasing the rich and diverse aspects of American history and society.

Over 250 English Language Teachers and more than 200 high school students took part in five storytelling workshops entitled, “Art of Dynamic Storytelling” presented by professional Chicago storyteller, Linda Gorham. These workshops were held at the American Corners in Sparti and Corfu and at a public school in the blue-collar port town of Piraeus on October 6th-9th. Gorham’s objective was to encourage teachers to use interactive story techniques as a tool to enhance students’ verbal expressions. Additionally, she shared folktales and environmental stories to demonstrate the art of interactive storytelling and provided teachers with a list of practical suggestions for using dynamic storytelling in their classrooms.
